This piece was my rendition of the classic George Nakashima Conoid Desk. I veered away from the more classical MCM look of the originals with their tapers and rectilinear lines, and instead leaned into the ‘natural’ look, with a hand-sculpted branch style leg and drawer fronts that utilize the softened live-edge of the walnut as pulls as opposed to hardware. Air-dried Walnut slabs form the top, with butterfly/bowtie inlays to arrest end checks. The drawer case is dovetailed with solid Walnut construction throughout, with dovetailed Maple drawer boxes on high quality soft-close slides. Finished with a hand-rubbed oil/wax finish for a matte look and soft, satin feel. This piece was crafted from the same tree as the Live Edge Walnut Kitchen Table, and for the same client.
