Modern Ash coffee table with Walnut accents, and companion side table — solid Ash construction with draw-bored Walnut breadboards. The top is gently tapered along the long edges to provide a soft curve, and allow the joinery below to be exposed. Lightly shaped support buttresses float the table top above the legs and slotted attachment points allow seasonal wood movement. The base was carved mostly by hand with rasps and spokeshaves to establish the changing radii and tapers. The companion side table was built alongside, with matching angles and radiused top along with a Walnut accent in the support rails. Both were finished with a hand-rubbed oil/wax mixture for a low-luster, satiny look and feel, accenting the natural grain of the Ash and the swirls in the Walnut while not obscuring the wood under a layer of film.
